The them of December

Fable

One day, a man decided to give up. He wanted to quit his job, his relationship, his faith—he wanted to give up on life.

He went into the forest to speak with the wise man. There, he asked for one good reason why he shouldn’t quit.

“Look around,” said the wise man. “Do you see the fern and the bamboo? When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I cared for both of them. I gave them light and water. The fern quickly sprouted from the ground. Its vibrant green covered the forest floor. But nothing came from the bamboo seed. Still, I did not give up on the bamboo.

“In the second year, the fern grew more vibrant and abundant. Again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not give up on the bamboo.

“In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not give up. In the fourth year, once more, there was nothing.

“Then, in the fifth year, a small sprout emerged from the ground. Compared to the fern, it was tiny and insignificant. But just six months later, the bamboo had grown to over 30 meters tall. It had spent five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive.

“Life never gives anyone a challenge they cannot overcome. All this time you thought you were struggling, you were actually growing roots.

“Do not compare yourself to others. The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern… Yet both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. And you will rise.”

'Even after all this time the sun never says to the earth, "you own me." Look what a love like that does. It lights the whole sky.'
